After earning a runner-up finish at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Joliet, Illinois, last year, Megan Meyer and her family-owned Top Alcohol Dragster were determined to walk away with the event win this year. This past weekend, they accomplished this goal. Megan competed alongside her teammate, Justin Ashley, who recently newly licensed to drive a Top Fuel Dragster. Megan and Justin finished out qualifying in the number three and ten positions, respectively, and Megan went on to compete in the JEGS Allstars Event on Saturday.

The JEGS Allstars Event is a battle of the champions of all of classes that make up the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Megan has watched her father, Randy Meyer, compete in the JEGS Allstars Event multiple times over the years, which he won in 2014. As a rookie in the event this year, Megan represented the Top Alcohol Dragster Class in the Central Region, alongside Dean Dubbin. Megan competed against Richard Bourke in the opening round of eliminations and took him out with a 5.30 E.T. at 266 mph. Unfortunately Megan ended her chances of winning the JEGS Allstars with a red-light start in the semi-final round against Mia Tedesco, finishing in third place for the event.

Eliminations for the Route 66 Nationals kicked off on Sunday with Megan Meyer vs. Bob Sargent and Justin Ashley vs. Duane Shields. Megan got the round victory with a 5.31 E.T. at 269 mph, while Justin had tire-shake that slowed him down to a losing 6.07 E.T. Megan then defeated Chris Demke in second round with a 5.35 E.T. at 266 mph, and moved on to face Mia Tedesco in the semi-finals. This round was a repeat of last year, and Megan came out on top again with a consistent 5.35 E.T. at 268 mph but gave up lane choice to defending event champion, Joey Severance. Megan was off the starting line first against Joey, and although he pulled ahead of Megan, his broken blower belt led to Megan getting around him to cross the finish line first.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Megan after winning the Route 66 Nationals. “Joey was ahead by a car length and all of a sudden he disappeared behind me. I just wanted to cross the finish line as soon as possible before he could get around me again. Joey had been a tenth of a second faster than us all weekend long, but because we had 30-45 minutes between eliminations, both of our cars slowed down and his simply became weaker than ours. I owe this win all to my team; we had extra help with the guys who could stay from Justin’s car and it made a big difference in the turnarounds. Although we struggled to be the quickest and fastest all weekend, we were somewhat consistent and I was quick on the tree all day, and that’s usually half of the battle.”

The Route 66 Nationals will air on Thursday, July 20, 2017 on Fox Sports 2 at 7:00 – 8:00pm CST.

While Megan and the team were in Chicago, Rachel Meyer was competing at Mo-Kan Dragway in Southwest Missouri for the Bracket Points Series. Rachel won 6 rounds of eliminations with her dragster in the Super Pro category, but was taken out in the 7th, and final, round of eliminations, with a -.013 red-light start. She consistently ran between a 5.13-5.00 E.T. in the 1/8th mile in eliminations at an average of 130 mph. Rachel is currently 9th in points with only 5 events, out of 12, in the Super Pro Class. Rachel will return to the seat of her Top Alcohol Dragster at the end of July for the Lucas Oil Series Central Regional Event at Heartland Park Topeka.

The Randy Meyer Racing Team’s next outing will be at St. Louis for the Lucas Oil North Central Regional Event on July 22-23.
