Racing to Save Lives: Protecting Roadside Workers with the Slow Down Move Over Law

Just Like With Racing, Every Second Counts. Every Life Matters.

Too many lives are lost every year due to preventable roadside incidents. The Slow Down Move Over law is designed to protect tow truck operators, first responders, and roadside workers—yet many motorists remain unaware of its existence.

At Randy Meyer Racing, we’re using the power of NHRA drag racing to spread awareness nationwide. Through our Racing to Save Lives campaign, in partnership with the Towing and Recovery Association of America (TRAA), we’re bringing this critical message to race fans and communities across the country.

What is the Slow Down Move Over Law?

The Slow Down Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or roadside assistance crews. Despite this law being in place across all 50 states, countless drivers are still unaware of their legal and moral responsibility to protect roadside workers.

Why This Mission Matters to Us

For Randy Meyer Racing, this isn’t just another safety campaign—it’s personal.

The Meyer family has built a winning legacy in NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster Drag Racing, breaking records and earning multiple world and regional championships. But beyond the race track, they have also been deeply involved in the towing industry dating back to the 1980s. Randy and his older brother, Joe Meyer, shared a passion for speed, mechanics, and business. Together, they built successful careers not just in motorsports, but also in towing and truck service operations.

Meyer Truck Center & Overland Tow Service
In the 1980s, Randy and Joe saw a growing need for high-quality tow trucks and roadside assistance services. Joe founded Overland Tow Service, which quickly became one of the most reputable towing operations in the Midwest. Meanwhile, Randy and his wife, Mary, launched Meyer Truck Center, a leading provider of tow truck sales, service, and custom builds.

Over the decades, the brothers worked tirelessly to support towing professionals, equipping operators with the best tools and resources to stay safe on the job. Their dedication to the industry made them respected figures in both towing and motorsports.

Honoring Joe Meyer: Tragically, in 2021, Joe Meyer was struck and killed while assisting a stranded driver on the roadside. His death was a devastating reminder of the dangers tow operators face every day.

Since then, Randy Meyer Racing has committed to using its racing platform to raise awareness about the dangers of roadside work and the importance of Slow Down Move Over laws. With our new Racing to Save Lives campaign, we’re taking this message nationwide, ensuring that Joe’s legacy lives on by protecting others in the industry he loved.
