OUR LEGACY
Randy Meyer began his drag racing career in 1979 at his local dragstrip, where he worked as a mechanic alongside his brother, Joe Meyer. What began as a job quickly became a passion for building race cars, and the brothers soon began fabricating and driving their own front-engine dragsters.
Randy's competitiveness continued to grow as he began chasing races with the American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) and NHRA. In 1983, Randy built his own blown alcohol rear-engine dragster and captured the AHRA World Championship, establishing himself as a serious competitor and setting the foundation for a career that would span more than four decades.
In 1988, Randy moved into the Top Fuel ranks, competing in both IHRA and NHRA through 1997. His first year in Top Fuel included a serious crash at Dallas when a header pipe broke near the finish line, cutting the rear tire and sending the dragster into a violent crash.
Rather than walking away from racing, Randy returned home, built another rear-engine dragster, and made the decision to leave his job and pursue racing full time. Although he did not find the major competitive success he had hoped for in Top Fuel, the experience ultimately helped shape his decision to transition into Top Alcohol Dragster.
After stepping away from racing in the late 1990s, Randy gradually returned to the sport while raising his two daughters, Megan and Rachel, and growing his tow truck and towing equipment business, Meyer Truck Center. In 2001, he officially entered the NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster class, beginning what would become the most successful chapter of his racing career.
In 2002, Randy handed the driving duties to Gary Ormsby Jr., and together they made NHRA history when the dragster became the first Top Alcohol Dragster to run in the 5.1-second range with a 5.135-second pass. The following year, Randy tuned Alan Bradshaw to the NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster World Championship, beginning a legacy that would eventually see multiple drivers earn championships under his guidance.
Randy returned to the driver's seat in 2004 and went on to win three consecutive NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 5 Championships. He added another Division 5 Championship in 2011, continuing to establish himself not only as a successful driver, but as one of the sport's most accomplished tuners and crew chiefs.
In 2014, Randy expanded his operation to two Top Alcohol Dragsters, bringing on a used second car with Chase Copeland behind the wheel. Running two cars gave Randy and his team valuable experience in building the organization that would eventually become one of the most competitive multi-car operations in the Top Alcohol Dragster class.
That same year, Randy accomplished one of the most prestigious achievements of his driving career by winning the JEGS Allstars race, an elite competition that brings together champions from across the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. It remains his first and only JEGS Allstars victory and stands among the highlights of his career behind the wheel.
In 2015, Chase Copeland helped fabricate a new generation of Top Alcohol Dragster for the team, featuring a lightweight, one-piece carbon fiber body. The car debuted that season as Randy continued to compete while also building the foundation of the team that would soon be led by the next generation of Meyer racers.
The 2015 season marked Randy's final year of driving and competing in NHRA competition, and he closed his driving career on a high note by winning the Houston SpringNationals for the third consecutive year in 2013, 2014, and 2015. His final career victory came in Noble, Oklahoma, bringing his time as a driver full circle while opening the door to a new chapter focused on building and guiding the next generation.
At the end of 2015, Randy's oldest daughter, Megan, made her Top Alcohol Dragster debut, officially beginning the Meyer family's next generation of competition. In 2016, Megan earned NHRA Rookie of the Year honors during her first full season, highlighted by a victory at the NHRA Charlotte Four-Wide Nationals.
Megan's success continued to elevate Randy Meyer Racing, and in 2019 she earned the team's first NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster World Championship under Randy's guidance. She followed it with a second consecutive championship in 2020, before Randy's youngest daughter, Rachel, carried the family legacy forward by earning the championship in 2021.
Randy continued to develop drivers and lead the team from the shop and the starting line, and in 2023 he guided Julie Nataas to the NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster World Championship. With multiple World Championships earned by drivers he has built, tuned, and mentored, Randy has established himself as one of the most successful team owners, tuners, and crew chiefs in NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster history.
Today, Randy Meyer Racing represents the culmination of more than four decades of Randy's work in drag racing—from turning wrenches at a local dragstrip with his brother, to building and driving his own race cars, to competing in Top Fuel, and ultimately developing a championship-winning organization. His commitment to family, performance, hard work, and continual improvement has built not only a successful race team, but a legacy that continues through the next generation of Meyer racers.
